Cancer Resource Center Gets Revamped

"I'm really excited to make this space really functional for cancer patients. We're looking at dividing the room and creating a special quiet area with flat screen TV and teaching videos that we could show," Lopp said.

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – For people who’ve just been diagnosed with cancer, many experience a range of emotions and questions. And with medical treatment advancing, it can be hard to keep up with real time information.

"We really find it's under utilized. It’s become outdated in its process and functionality. We put in the internet which people thought was a great opportunity, but now people seem to have it at home and on their iPhones and everywhere else," said Susan Lopp of the John R. Marsh Cancer Center.

At the John R. Marsh Cancer Center in Hagerstown, administrators are excited that plans to revamp the cancer resource room are underway; an important piece to the puzzle they say is long overdue.

"That is thanks to our donors. The cancer center is a recipient with a lot of funds because I think cancer touches a lot of lives in this community and resonates with a lot of people," said Laurie Harrison with the Meritus Health Care Foundation.

"I'm really excited to make this space really functional for cancer patients. We're looking at dividing the room and creating a special quiet area with flat screen TV and teaching videos that we could show," Lopp said.

The project is expected to benefit cancer patients, especially those who have just been diagnosed.

The new room will house wigs, scarves and resources for those going through chemotherapy.

"So they have a nice mirror and a place where they can be there with a family member and get comfortable with that aspect of their appearance, getting ready to change," said Lopp.

Officials say it’s a valuable resource to help patients continue to live their lives to fullest.

Administrators of Meritus Medical Center say more than $20,000 in funds have been given to build this Cancer Resource Center.
