School Gets Major Renovation, New Security Features

Crews are hard at work at Yellow Springs Elementary School in Frederick making changes to the school that hasn't seen a major renovation in almost 40 years.

FREDERICKMD - An elementary school in Frederick County is getting a major face-lift in time for the new school year.

Crews are hard at work at Yellow Springs Elementary School in Frederick making changes to the school that hasn't seen a major renovation in almost 40 years.

"We are very pleased to be able to have our students and staff of Yellow Springs Elementary comes back to a school that has enclosed classrooms, larger hallways, increased security and safety features, and increased flexibility in technology," said Cathy Menzel, community engagement coordinator with Frederick County Public Schools.

Some of the new technology includes a brand-new media room, which will have new computers and a place to check out books. The classrooms have more electrical outlets, and that's not all.

"Some of the features of our new technology will be Promethean SMARTBoards in all of our classrooms, and thanks to this renovation, we have the flexibility to do those sorts of installations," Menzel said.

The renovations are expected to cost about $200,000.

"We'll have ceiling drops in every classroom for the technology. We'll have projectors mounted on every ceiling," said Susan Kreiger, principal at Yellow Springs Elementary School.

Crews are putting in higher walls so it will be harder for smoke to get into a classroom in an effort to increase security.

One of the biggest security features will be an enclosed lobby. Doors will be built where this window is now, where all visitors must sign in. Crews will also put in new double doors that lock at two places by the entrance.

"We will have special internal key systems so if we ever did have a visitor to the school that wasn't expected, we could announce this to teachers," Kreiger said. "They have a key system that will close the doors from the inside, and no one will be able to enter the classrooms."

Frederick County Public Schools expect the renovations to be completed by August 8th when teachers come back into their classrooms. Students will get to take advantage of the new features when school starts on August 19.

Yellow Springs Elementary School has about 25 classrooms and almost 500 students.
