In Maryland, the state has new requirements for all schools, specifically for kindergarten and seventh grade students.
New students at Wilson College moved into their dorms Wednesday, and for the very first time in the school's history, males are allowed to live on-campus.
Each year businesses and citizens partner with the Frederick County Public Schools and the United Way of Frederick County to help provide students with the tools they need to start the school year off right.
"It feels great to be in a new school, it's fresh, it's clean, it's colorful," said Lauren Belliotti, teacher.
State police are gearing up for back to school and are increasing patrols in the area.
"Where else can you go and for a day, work your butt off, be a part of thousands of people's lives and be better for it?!"
“It's an opportunity for the community to allow children who normally wouldn't be able to go to preschool to expand their horizons to close the educational gap,” said Joy Fountain, director at The Learning Bee in Frederick County.
“People tend to, for whatever reason, not pay attention to the red flashing lights and the stop arm on the school buses and we're trying to keep our kids safe and that's the only way we can do it," Mullendore said.
"I think it let's them know that they have a worth, they're worth something you know," says Loretta McFarland, the Arts and Culture mentor.

"I think any tools that you can give them that are extra will benefit them in the long run. And I like to challenge the kids in learning a new word everyday," said Laureen Valentine, co-chairman of annual dictionary project.
"It's not real cool to read in eighth grade. But, by the end of the year, we read a lot," Andrukat said. She added, "It was beautiful to just go outside and read outside."
Students got a hands on experience with the construction equipment, tools and material that are being used to build a new learning activity center and residential cottages.
According to Superintendent Dr. Lynn Boyer, moving the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind from Romney is not necessarily a good plan.
A dedication ceremony was held in honor of Frederick County, Virginia's new transportation facility located behind Armel Elementary School.
"It's really cool, everything is new," said Brennan Amarel, a freshman at Spring Mills High School. "Nobody knows where to go, but we will figure it out."
There's an online system that's making it easier for Washington County parents to pay and keep track of their student's meal expenses -- MySchoolBucks.
Wednesday was the official opening of the new Spring Mills High School, which is part of the Spring Mills Educational campus.
Starting this school year there will be no graphic t-shirts, no leggings, no hooded sweatshirts, and no flip-flops allowed in Chambersburg schools.
