Finding Ways To Get School Supplies for Free

FREDERICK, MD - School supplies can be pricey, but there's a way you can get them for free.

Pens, crayons, backpacks, all the school supplies a child needs to head back to the classroom, are now being offered for free, thanks to a group in Frederick.

"All of the ministerial groups, food banks places in Frederick County are doing something for the school kids," says Senior Pastor of Evangelical Reform Barbara Kershner Daniel.

On Monday, children and parents lined up for free school supplies at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Frederick. There were tables designated for each child's grade, and students were able to choose what items they wanted.

"We believe that school supplies are important to give everyone an equal opportunity to education," says Reverend Brian Scott, Executive Director of the Religious Coalition.
The Coalition provides assistance to families in need. This is just one of the events that the Religious Coalition is doing to help parents ease into the new school year.

Notices were sent to parents who qualify, and nearly 600 children showed up to the event.

"We put out an email blast to the area church to the religious coalition web page and also through our church and we received a large donation including cash to buy the supplies," says Daniel.

And it's not just Frederick County that's getting free school supplies, some schools are also benefiting.

Winters Elementary School in Hagerstown received a grant and is giving each student free supplies on the first day of school.
