Man charged with attempted child abduction

Suspect is being held without bond

WHITE OAK, Md. - A Montgomery County man remains in police custody as of Wednesday night after he was arrested on charges of child abduction and indecent exposure.

The Montgomery County Police Department says that at around 7 in the evening this past Easter Sunday,Jemberu Bekele Geda made his way to this play area on Stewart Lane, grabbed two male boys under the age of 10 by the wrists and attempted to take them inside his apartment.

"Officers determined that Mr. Geda had been watching the kids on the playground for a while before he actually made the attempt to grab the two boys," Montgomery County Police spokesperson Rick Goodale.

Fortunately, the two boys, ages 8 and 9, broke away and fled to their home to tell their parents.

It was later that responding officers learned that earlier that same day, Geda had also exposed himself to a 13 year old female in the neighborhood.

Detectives are still looking into Geda's past so this case, even though he was arrested, is be no means closed."

However, that past includes no prior arrests or criminal history and Geda's next door neighbor said that she would often allow him to play with her children, though never alone because of other issues that Geda may have been experiencing.

"I didn't leave my son with him alone because I know that he man has a problem," said Geda's next door neighbor Akua Manu. "It's like dementia."

The incident has shocked adults while putting the kids of this neighborhood on high alert to help keep their siblings safe.

When Geda himself was interviewed by detectives, he said that he only wanted to bring the boys into his apartment so that they could play together although he did not say what those games would include.

Due to the nature of these alleged crimes, Geda has been ordered to be held without bond.
