Twenty-year-old Ruben Ortiz and 19-year-old Shanee Cox were arrested for their connection to the death of Sulaiman Jalloh on Sunday morning.

Montgomery County Police said Jalloh and his friends robbed Ortiz of his sneakers and cash on Saturday night at the Days Inn on 13th Street. Cox witnessed the incident.

The next morning, Ortiz, Cox and their friends assaulted Jalloh, according to court documents, stabbing, robbing and ultimately killing him.

Family members of Ortiz and Cox tearfully stood in court Tuesday, urging the judge to set a bond since both suspects have children to take care of.

"Anytime there's a scene where violence takes place and a person is killed, there's a need to protect the community. Being held on no bond certainly addresses that need,” said Ramon Korionoff, Director of Public Affairs, Montgomery County's State's Attorney's Office.

Cox has no previous convictions, but Ortiz has appeared in juvenile court several times.
