Westside Regional Park Task Force holds first meeting

Regular meetings are schedule for the third Wednesday of every month

FREDERICK, Md. - The Mayor of Frederick recently appointed a new task force to help bring the reality of the grand vision for the Westside Regional Park.

It is now one step closer for making Westside Park a reality.

“This is another step on a long process that we have been on. We very thankful to have the master plan approved back in January by the Mayor and Board of Alderman,” said the Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Frederick, Bob Smith.

The Mayor of Frederick, Randy McClement, appointed a task force for the Westside Regional Park Plan and Wednesday night marked their first meeting.

"This is next step for this task force to get these great minds in the same room and start to talk about how we can work together and have conversations on how we can make that master plan a reality,” said Smith.

Made up of 14 representatives from across Frederick County, the force will help oversee the plan as well as helping develop design and engineering standards for the proposed park, located as what is known as the Hargett Farm right on Butterfly Lane.

"I think the most important thing is to make sure that everyone on the committee is on board without the idea of what is that we are trying to accomplish,” said Board of Alderman member, Michael O’Connor. “And part of what we are going to start in the beginning is that we are pulling in the same direction."

Officials said they hope to bring the reality of the grand vision for the city's most substantial Recreation Facility and Aquatic Park.

Funding for the project is not available yet, but officials said it is proposed in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2018 city budget.

Even though this is the first of many meetings, this task force is excited to move this project forward for Frederick residents.

"I think we need to encourage the public to communicate with us to know that their voices are a part of the process. It is not just the task force word. This park will become a reality because of the community,” said O’Connor.

Regular meetings are schedule for the third Wednesday of every month for over the next year.
