Man Threatens Neighbors with Firearm

- HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The Washington County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Hagerstown man after they say he threatened his neighbors with a firearm.

The incident happened on Tuesday, June 17 around 6:45 p.m. along the 17300 block of Ontario Drive.

Deputies say a man was seen in the yard at the address, holding a rifle. When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they ordered the man to drop the weapon. They say he proceeded to go inside the residence instead.

Neighbors of the man advised police he had pointed the rifle at them while they were standing in front of the window of their house. Neighbors told police they feared for their safety, and thought the man might shoot at them due to an ongoing dispute.

Deputies were able to talk to the man into leaving his house unarmed. He was identified as Roy Milton Shirk Jr., 59, of Hagerstown. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Police were able to locate a .22 caliber rifle leaning against the wall inside the front door of the house.

Shirk is charged with three counts of first and second assault, and three counts of reckless endangerment.

He's currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $15,000 bond.
