Western Heights Middle School Savages win Battle of the Books

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Western Heights Middle School redefined girl power over the weekend after it's team of eight girls took home the top prize at Washington County's Battle of the Books.

Each team, comprised of fourth through sixth-graders, were assigned to read at least two out of 20 novels chosen for competition, but all of the girls on Western Heights Middle Book Savages opted to read five or six.

On Saturday, the girls beat the final seven teams by answering written questions about specific, but important, book details.

After two years of disappointing finishes together, the girls said they thought they finally figured out the winning formula.

"All the people on our team were very focused. We wanted to win and that was our goal, so we achieved it by working hard,” said London Hershey, Western Heights Middle School sixth-grader.

The Western Heights team has been preparing for the competition for most of the school year.
