Meal Machine Returns for Another Summer

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - It's back for another summer, the Meal Machine, an effort that's fueling the community during the summer months when some kids have limited access to food.

“Hunger is the most severe roadblock to the learning process. So filling that gap in the summer time really helps to one give the students the opportunity to the meal and hopefully be better prepared to come back to school in the fall,” said Mike Embly, Assistant Supervisor of Food and Nutrition Services for Washington County Public Schools

Recently, the Washington County Public Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services received a $45,000 grant helping them expand their vehicle fleet from one truck to three.

And with more wheels, the Meal Machine now serves four sites across Washington County.

One of the newest locations is Children in Need, a nonprofit that assists students who are eligible for free and reduced meals with free clothes and school supplies.

“I think it's good for our clients and it brings it right here to the door and gets their belly full,” said Ann Martin with Children in Need.

Last year, the Meal Machine distributed more than 7000 meals. This year with three trucks, school officials hope to double that number but they say it'll take the community's help to grow this effort in the future.

“We've left room on the vehicle for sponsor names and we're really going to start pushing the streets and looking for folks that want to get involved with the project sponsor additional vehicles,” said Embly.

And it's an effort that many say is much needed.

“To make sure these kids have a chance,” said Martin. “To make sure they can keep growing, and grow healthy and grow with society and not be a burden on society; this is all about making them successful.”

Bringing the fuel to the community that many hope will make a difference this summer.

The Meal Machine runs Monday through Friday until August 8th.
