Missing Juvenile Linked to Multiple Crimes Caught

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. - Maryland State Police announced Thursday the missing juvenile who was a person of interest involving motor vehicle theft, hit and run, and attempted burglary of an occupied residence, was located in Montgomery County on July 25.

Troopers said Leandro Ovalles, 16, of Silver Spring, Md., will be charged as a juvenile in Allegany, Washington, and Montgomery counties for crimes committed during the July 8, 2014 incident. He was turned over to Juvenile Services and will remain in their custody pending disposition of charges of theft and burglary.

As we've reported, the teenager fled the scene of an accident on Tuesday, July 8 along Interstate-70.
The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Interstate-70 eastbound near mile-marker 27 at the I-81 interchange.

They said Ovalles was driving in a stolen 1996 Jeep Cherokee SUV when he struck a State Highway Administration (SHA) mowing tractor that was parked along the side of the interstate, before running off the roadway into a guardrail. Police said Ovalles got out of his Jeep and fled the scene on foot.

Troopers said Ovalles was reported missing from a group home in Garrett County, Maryland.

State police said Ovalles was never considered dangerous, but was considered a flight risk.
