10-Year-Old Mayson Deighton Found Safe

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. Deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office say a 10-year-old girl is safe after missing for nearly 12 hours.

Mayson Deighton went missing Monday night, Feb. 24, 2014 but was found by a police K-9 unit around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning lying under leaves near Cardinal Avenue and Robinwood Drive in Hagerstown.

Police said her parents told them Mayson was not wearing shoes, or a coat when she left home. An amber alert was never issued because deputies say they did not believe she had been abducted.

"We are still investigating what lead her to running away and things on that line," said Deputy Carly Hose, Washington County Sheriff's Office. "Our biggest concern and focus right now is her health, and that she has been located and that she is being evaluated and taken care of."

The Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police and the Mid-Atlantic D.O.G.S. search and rescue team worked throughout the night on foot and with a helicopter to find her.

"It is a huge relief," said Deputy Hose. "You can just see it on everybody's faces that we found her and she is ok. Everybody breathed a collective sigh of relief that she has
been found and that she is safe."

The Sheriff's Office says she was okay but extremely cold when they found her.

"She was speaking to deputies, answering minor questions about if she could feel her toes, fingers, things along those lines and we were trying to warm her up as well as we could until EMS were able to get there," said Deputy Hose.

Mayson was taken to Mertius Medical Center for further evaluation.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is still investigating why she ran away.  We'll let you know when we learn more about her disappearance.
