The Humane Society of Washington County, or HSWC, held their first "ASPCA Rachael Ray 100K Challenge Kick-Off Mega Adoption Event" at PetCo near the Valley Mall in Hagerstown on Saturday.
"I think we brought probably about 80 animals, and I think we've adopted out 35, so we're probably at a little less than half, which is great. We've never done anything like this before so we really didn't know what to expect," said Kirk Livers, the marketing coordinator for the HSWC.
The event was part of a nationwide competition to see which humane society could find homes for the highest number of shelter animals in one day. The winning humane society will be awarded with $100,000 and the satisfaction of knowing these animals have found good homes.
"It's a competition. Of course the grand prize is $100,000. First of all, it's $100,000 and who doesn't want to win that? So we started off with that, and we want to set goals for ourselves and we want to continue to strive to be animal welfare professionals and to strive to be the best in the community. We thought this is a great way to set goals for ourselves and to really measure them," said Livers.
When asked if HSWC hosts other adoption events, Livers told us, "We have adoption specials that go on throughout the entire summer. Every Friday is 'Free Cat Friday.' So if a fee is a concern, don't let it be, because you can come in and adopt a cat for free on Fridays. Tuesdays are 'Take Me Home Tuesdays.' so every animal goes home at 50% off. And then Sundays are your 'Pick Your Price Dog Adoption.' You can come in and pick your price from a container randomly. It could be $0. It could be the full fee. We are just trying to save as many lives as possible throughout this entire summer."
If you happened to miss the big event, HSWC will be hosting another mega adoption event this summer at the PetSmart in hagerstown on August 23rd.
