BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. - A daring dog ice rescue had a happy ending as a family was reunited with their loved one, but firefighters say this rescue was a little different from most.
"And I couldn't get her out and I was just scared she might not make it out," said Buckey Silvous, homeowner.
"So we all ran out just like a normal call. There were five of us on the unit, and we were just ready to go," said Matt Petry, South Berkeley County Volunteer Fire Company.
It was around on Monday afternoon when firefighters got a call for an ice rescue and they rushed to the scene to find a worried Silvous family.
"We were very scared because she was panicking, and stopped and was whining and carrying on and we just figured she was getting too tired and wouldn't be able to make it out," said Ilavan Silvous, homeowner.
But after a 10 minute rescue, firefighters were able to safely return Pistol, a 7-year-old Rottweiler to her family.
"I was just happy. I mean I even shook their hand and thanked them because they did a real good job," said Buckey Silvous.
This was the first ice rescue they've had all year and firefighters say it's always a good feeling when the mission is successful.
"All of us were feeling great right after the call. We felt like accomplished and the homeowner was happy because that's his, that dog is like their kid, another family member. So it feels great to do it," said Petry.
And for the Silvous family, they're happy Pistol is safe and sound. But they don't think Pistol will be playing on the pond anytime soon.
"I mean she's been out there on that pond before and walking around all over that pond. And never fell in but with the weather being warm she just go on," said Buckey Silvous.
"I think she might have learned her lesson. Because I don't think she's going back out there again," said Ilavan Silvous.
Firefighters ask residents to stay off ice covered ponds or lakes because the ice can be deceiving.
