FREDERICK, Md. - Sneakers were replaced with heels and tutus and tiaras were mandatory, as men of all ages dressed up in pink for the first "Dudes Run Like A Princess" race on Saturday morning.
"Anything to make Morgan and the rest of the kids smile. I mean honestly, we were like lets have fun with it, raise money for the park. And we started out with maybe, 10 participants and then it snowballed," said Kristin Rinker, race organizer.
This race was a community send off before a group of runners participate in the Disney Princess half marathon later this month. All the donations will go to Sophie and Madigan's Playground, a charity created to honor the two little girls who died in a tragic house fire last January.
"We've had different events for the community to come out and support the girls and support the playground. But this one was pretty cool because our two girls were princesses and they would have loved this," said Jack Lillard, Sophie and Madigan's dad.
So far, they've raised $100,000 for the playground.
"You know the mission of Sophie and Madigan's Playground, it's not only about the playground in Frederick, Maryland but also to help families build memories together and that's a big thing. And to keep Sophie and Madigan's memory you know alive," said Jennifer Record, race organizer.
"I think it shows just how much we're willing to support everybody and come together and do what's needed to help them out," said Robert Coffman, runner.
And for the Lillard family, it was another way to keep the memory of their girls alive.
"They would have loved seeing all the guys dressed up in their pinks and dresses and tutus," said Lillard. "And I'm sure they're laughing still right now and they're looking down on us."
Organizers say they want the "Dudes Run Like A Princess" to become an annual event. To donate to the "Sophie and Madigan's Playground Fund", just head to their website: http://sophieandmadigansplayground.org/
