Dispatchers in Jefferson County said the call came in just before 2:30 a.m. for a structure fire with explosions on Edgewood Drive, off of Paynes Ford Road.
Crews from Jefferson, Berkeley and Washington counties all responded to the fire. When they arrived on the scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames. It took crews 45 minutes for them to knock the fire down.
Neighbors on scene told WHAG the home belonged to an older woman that passed away and her family continued to take care of it. They said when they woke up, all they saw were flames bursting out of every part of the home.
"Just the house was fully engulfed. I mean, there was fire jumping out off the roof and everything. The side of the house, out of the garage, the front of it, and it was just a lot of fire," said Keith Carter, neighbor.
Dispatchers said thankfully no one was inside at the time of the fire, and no one was injured. They said the structure is a total loss.
The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.
