Mark, a military policeman, was shot and killed Monday by a civilian at the world’s largest naval base, Naval Station Norfolk.
Mark's mother Sharon Blair says he was not just a hero on Monday, he's been her hero all his life.
"I want my baby. I want him home,” said Blair tearfully. "Mark was kind, Mark wasn't judgmental, mark didn't judge people. Mark was good-hearted."
Mark’s family says he did not die in vain.
"He chose to be a military police and he served it proudly,” said Mark’s father Decondi Mayo.
Blair says Mark knew all his life he wanted to be in law enforcement, playing cops and robbers with his three older siblings at a young age.

Although his family says they are proud of Mark for his heroic actions, they are still dealing with the shock of losing him.
"I always felt that he was safe on a military base,” said Mark’s oldest brother Tim Borum. “I always felt that he was protected, and it isn't making any sense, none of it. I'm just trying to grasp what happened. How and why. There are still so many unanswered questions."
