Father Convicted of All Charges in Martinsburg Child Abuse Trial

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - James Mauldin was found guilty on all counts Friday in the death of 3-year-old Kaiwon Connelly.

"Kaiwon, at this point, has got justice for what happened to him in his household,” Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely stated.

Mauldin was found guilty on counts including death of a child by child abuse, child abuse causing serious bodily injuries and malicious assault.

Connelly was pronounced dead New Year’s Day 2012 after suffering from second and third degree burns on his rear end and back of his thighs. He also suffered from severe brain trauma and bleeding in his brain.

The boy was living with Mauldin and his girlfriend, Jasmine Dawkins, who was tried earlier this year.

"We're grateful for the jury verdict in this case because it finally gives accountability across the board,” Neely added. “You have to realize we did get some convictions on Ms. Dawkins as well. This household is where this child was tortured and died, and now we have justice for him.”

After four days a verdict was reached in a very disturbing case.

“We obviously disagree with the verdict but we respect the judicial process and thank the jurors for their service,” Defense Attorney Christopher Perezioso stated.

“We're grateful for the jury verdict, they worked really, really hard,” Neely said. ”Even though this case is over with, it has disappointed a lot of people since 2011. This has been a case that has haunted a lot of us."

Mauldin’s sentence is scheduled for May 29, 2014
