WARREN COUNTY, Va. - A large fire in Front Royal over the weekend severely damaged a local home and killed multiple pets inside.

The fire happened at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at a house located at 420 Duncan Avenue.

When Warren County Fire and Rescue units arrived on the scene, they saw the two-story wood frame home with flames coming from the rear porch and windows. Crews entered the house through the front door, and were able to knockdown the main body of the fire. A quick search was made in 15 minutes with no one found.

Fire officials said the family's two dogs, a cat, and a bird were found but all succumbed to heat and smoke inhalation.

One puppy was rescued by a town police officer and transported to Winchester Animal Hospital.

Damage is estimated at $160,000. Officials said while the home was insured by it's owner, Treacy Taylor, of Winchester, Va., the renter, Ronald Breen and his wife lost everything. They were offered assistance from the Top of Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross.

One firefighter was treated on scene for heat exhaustion. The fire is under investigation by the Warren County Fire Marshal's Office.
