The blaze broke out at a house at 363 Fairview Circle, just west of Woodstock, around 4 p.m.
Those with the Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue say the fire was discovered when a neighbor went to the home, unlocked the front door, saw smoke, and immediately called 911. A person who lives in the house had left about 20 minutes before the fire was discovered.
"House fires are devastating," said John Collins, public information officer for Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue.
Firefighters arrived to find a fire in the attic and had a hard time battling the flames due to high winds, according to fire and rescue.
The home is a total loss. Fire Marshal David A. Ferguson has preliminarily ruled the cause of the fire as accidental.
