Troopers said the driver, identified as Steven Lee Winfrey, 51, of Roanoke, Va., suffered an acute cardiac event before traveling off the east side of I-81 northbound near Exit 12.
The single-vehicle crash happened at 4:52 a.m. Tuesday, July 15. Troopers said Winfrey had radioed in to another driver, who was driving behind him, that he wasn't feeling well. Moments later, the other driver observed Winfrey's tractor trailer veer off the interstate, travel a couple hundred yards in the grassy shoulder, before striking a cement culvert, bursting into flames.
Winfrey was driving in a 2001 Freightliner that was carrying uncooked dough, police say.
The other tractor trailer driver did stop to render aid, but due to the intense flames he could do nothing, troopers explained.
The accident remains under investigation.
