Is a Sportsplex Coming to Hagerstown?

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - It's a project still in the works, but some are already saying that having a sportsplex come to Hagerstown would be a great idea.

Could it be a reality or just a field of dreams?

"It could be a good idea because if it brings people together," said Dennis Whitmore, a local resident.

Officials with the Washington County Economic Development Commission have made a recommendation to have what is currently being called a City Center, a proposed facility which would be built on Summit Avenue.

"The draft of this report included six initiatives. The committee went back to work, two more were added. Number eight is the possible development of a city center sports complex," said Dan Pheil, Economic Development Commission.

Pheil said the concept of the city center is still very much in abstract form. But Ed Lough with the City Center Committee noted in their meeting Thursday to support the possibility of including arts and education as part of the project, and possibly an indoor sports aquatics center.

"These are very good ideas I think. Of course it will take money and funding, but that's part of the process. You know when people look to locate here it's all about what is there to do," explains Pheil.

The final report hasn’t been completed, but Pheil says he’s confident the recommendation for a multi-use sports and events center will become a reality.
