Jury Returns Guilty Verdict in Child Abuse Case

- BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. - A jury of five women and seven men have decided the fate of a Berkeley County woman in a child death trial we've been following all week.

Just before 5 p.m. Friday a jury found Jamine Dawkins guilty of two counts of gross child neglect and a misdemeanor of false presentation of a child's injury. Dawkins was found not guilty of the most serious charge; death of a child by a custodian, guardian or parent.

As we've reported, Dawkins was charged in the New Years Day 2012 death of her then-boyfriend's child, three-year-old Kaiwon Connelly.

Her defense team claimed she was the victim of abuse herself and she be cleared of all charges.

Dawkins could still face seven to 30 years in prison. The sentencing is scheduled for January 16, 2014. The court is still deciding if Dawkins will be free pending her sentencing.

Dawkins was taken into custody after the trial and is being held at Eastern Regional Jail.

WHAG's Bejoy Joseph will have a complete recap from the courtroom tonight at 11 p.m.
