WHAG NEWS - The opening ceremonies kicked off with a tribute to a former Hagerstown police officer, who was dedicated to serving the Special Olympics.

The family of the late Sergent John Ryder was presented with a medal in his honor. Sgt. Ryder served the Hagerstown Police Department for more than 40 years. His wife says he dedicated his life to service and spent more than 20 years coordinating events for the Special Olympics of Maryland.

He passed away last August, just months before he ran in the 2013 Summer Olympics Torch Run.

"It was very important to him to do things for the community, for other people, and I think that is the way we want him to be remembered, his humanitarian services to the community," said Rayetta Ryder, John's wife.

The Hagerstown Police Department was also honored by the Special Olympics in Ryder's honor.
