The Neighborhood Blitz is a unique campaign that gives teachers and volunteers the chance to meet students and parents before the start of the new school year.
Parents can also learn about the curriculum and programs that will be offered to their children. Organizers said they've seen an improvement in student participation since the program began three years ago.
"They get to meet their teacher. We're going to an environment that they're comfortable with. It's their home, so it's no pressure, no stress and then when they get to school they see a familiar face," said John Brooks, teacher at Salem Avenue Elementary.
The parent night barbecue event will be held this Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
