ALLEGANY COUNTY, Md. - A scary moment for one local woman Wednesday morning after deputies say a man broke into her house, stealing cash.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. at a residence along Riordan Road in Westernport.

The woman was asleep when she awoke to the sound of someone inside her house, and saw light from a flashlight outside her bedroom door. She told police she yelled at the person who ran downstairs and out of the house, as she called 911.

Deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff's office searched the victim's house and discovered money missing from various locations within the home.

With the help of a Mineral County Deputy and his K-9, deputies searched the area and arrested George Edward Mayhew II, 32, of Westernport, in connection to the crime. Deputies say he was found with evidence related to the crime on him and inside his backpack.

Mayhew is charged with first, third and fourth-degree burglary, theft under $1,000 and destruction of property under $1,000.

He's currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $7,500 bond.
