Deputies arrested Gary Dale Hamilton III, 25, in connection to the two home burglaries. The first incident occurred on Jan. 25, 2014 at a home on Watercliffe Street in Lonaconing. Deputies say Hamilton entered the elderly woman's house, displayed a knife and demanded money. He then searched through the woman's purse before fleeing the scene on foot.
Deputies said they had been at the house earlier that day when the woman came home to discover someone had been inside her house. At that time the only thing that was taken was a small amount of loose change. A search was conducted, but the suspect wasn't found at that time.
The second incident occurred just a day later on Jan. 26, 2014 at another home along the same road on Watercliffe Street. Deputies say this home also belonged to an elderly woman. In this incident, Hamilton entered the residence, displayed a knife and demanded cash. He was able to escape with an undisclosed amount of money.
Both women in the burglaries, as well as neighbors in the area were able to provide similar descriptions of the suspect. Once again a search was conducted by deputies, Maryland State Police K-9 handler and dog, MSP helicopter trooper 5 and officers with the Md. Department of Natural Resources Police.
A man matching the description of the suspect was spotted. When officers approached him, the suspect ran. During the foot chase, deputies say the suspect discarded a backpack. The suspect was eventually taken into custody. Investigators searched the backpack and discovered several pieces of jewelry and a small amount of illegal CDS. A box cutter was also recovered.
Hamilton was arrested at that time and initially charged with CDS violations. He was incarcerated at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $2,500 bond. As the investigation continued, victims were shown the items of jewelry that were recovered and positively identified them. Other items of evidence, including clothing matching that worn by the suspect, was also recovered.
Investigators say Hamilton is charged with two counts each of armed robbery, robbery, assault, theft, first, third and fourth-degree burglary among other related charges. He was taken before a District Commissioner for an initial appearance, where an additional bond of $20,000 was placed against him. He's currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center pending his next court appearance.
