CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mark Thomas, 44, was found guilty on all counts against him Thursday in a Franklin County courtroom.
"He was a family friend of the victim in the case," said Deputy Attorney General Daniel J. Dye. "It was alleged that from July of 2012 through April 2013 that he had sexual contact with a minor, a 13-year-old female."Thomas was found guilty of statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviant sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of a minor. Thomas' argument was that the victim came on to him.
"We're not going to, as a society, say that 13-year-old children are somehow out there raping adults," Dye said. "That was his argument and quite frankly, this Franklin County jury didn't buy it."During the two day trial, the jury heard statements from Pennsylvania State Police, and even the victim herself.
"That's what these cases are really about. A child saying, 'This is what happened to me,'" Dye said. "It takes a lot of bravery to do that, and she did it."The jury only deliberated for about an hour before returning a guilty verdict.
"We had filed charges alleging that this happened, and the jury said it did," Dye added. "I don't think there's any greater endorsement than that."
Thomas will be evaluated before his sentencing, which is scheduled for September 10, 2014.
