The crash happened around 6 a.m. along I-81 southbound during Friday morning's rush hour, according to Maryland State Police.
Troopers along with local Fire and EMS companies responded to southbound I-81 at Exit 8 for the reported collision. An investigation revealed at Timothy Parks Sr., 53, of Hagerstown, Md., was driving in his 2003 Dodge Durango along the interstate when he attempted to exit onto Salem Avenue from the left lane. Parks' vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer that was driving in the right lane, causing the Durango to roll several times.
Troopers say the vehicle then entered the wooded gore area and struck a tree. They say Parks, who was not seat belted, was thrown into the rear seat. Police say he was extricated and transported to Meritus Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Food Lion tractor trailer, Stephen Gallahan, 45, of Hagerstown, Md., was not injured in the crash, police say.
The accident is currently being investigated by Trooper Hendershot. It appears alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to police.
