Following a recall by Wawona Packing Company, the stores removed organic peaches and nectarines and certain Orchard Perfect peaches, nectarines and plums due to the potential contamination.
Giant and Martin's have received no reports of illnesses from the fruit to date. However, they're stating anyone who purchased the fruit between June 1 and July 21, 2014 should discard any unused portions and bring their receipt to Giant/Martin's for a full refund.
According to the release, Listeria is a common organism found in nature. Consumption of contaminated food can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease.
Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, sever headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections on those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy, the release said.
