The lane restriction will start at 9 a.m. and will go no longer than 3 p.m. Thursday. Officials say the left lane of northbound I-81 will be closed for a short distance about one mile north of the Maryland state line, and just south of the Hykes Road overpass in Antrim Township.
Currently, about 22,500 vehicles travel daily on this portion of Interstate-81. Trucks account for 24 percent of this traffic.
PennDOT officials say the single-lane traffic restriction in necessary so clean-up crews from the Environmental Products and Services of Vermont can finish clean-up from a diesel fuel leak. About one month ago a tractor trailer overturned and caught fire in the median area, leaking the diesel fuel.
Officials are asking drivers in the area to be alert and slow down when approaching and traveling through the work zone on Thursday. The clean-up operation should wrap up and restore northbound I-81 to two lanes of traffic by 3 p.m., if not sooner.
