FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - Mary Duggan is the first woman in the four-state area to get a surprise makeover from the nonprofit organization Hello Gorgeous.

“Pretty surprised, I really didn't have any idea,” said a giggly Mary Duggan, who's battling with Thyroid Cancer.

The Renaissance Salon and Spa is partnering up with the organization to help cancer victims.

“I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer back in September,” said Duggan.

“She just had a baby, and some of it was found out during the pregnancy so it was a lot to deal with,” said Mary’s mom Meave Duggan.

Mary’s mom said she wanted to do something special for her daughter, and that’s when Friday turned into a day at the spa. The day of beauty and rejuvenation includes a facial, manicure and pedicure, and hair treatments. Hello Gorgeous provides makeovers for woman across the country battling cancer.

“Cancer steals everything that makes us feel like a girl our eyebrow, our eyelashes, sometimes our nose hairs so the nose runs all the time and if it's Breast Cancer it can stale our breast so what hello gorgeous tries to do is replace some of those things that help make us feel feminine,” said Hello Gorgeous Founder Kim Becker.

Mary is also receiving a new outfit and will reveal her new look at a party with close friends and family.

Tami Anderson, co-owner of the Renaissance Salon and Spa says employees took a training course to better understand the impacts cancer has on the body now that they’re a Hello Gorgeous affiliate.

"After radiation and chemotherapy there skin tone has changes, their nails, hair and our staff is now better prepared and understanding the ramifications from those treatments,” said Tami Anderson, co-owner of the Renaissance Salon and Spa.

The Renaissance Salon is officially the 30th Hello Gorgeous Affiliate across the country and the owners say they plan to surprise one woman battling cancer each month with a makeover.

Hello Gorgeous is working with a famous local director to develop at TV show based on the women getting makeovers, their families and the organization.
