Officer Identified in Weekend Frederick Shooting

- FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick Police Department has released the identity of the officer who was involved in a shooting last week.

Police said Officer James Martin was the officer involved in the shooting on Saturday, August 16. Police said Martin is a 18+ veteran of the department. He is currently assigned to the Special operations Division, Drug Enforcement Unit, where he has been assigned for the last 12 years.

As we've reported, the incident began between Officer Martin and Roy Turner along W. Patrick Street. According to police, Turner appeared suspicious to Officer Martin, who approached him to investigate. Lt. Clark Pennington with the Frederick Police Department said during that encounter, Turner struck Officer Martin with his vehicle. Officer Martin fired into the vehicle, striking Turner one time.

Turner then fled the scene. He was taken into custody in the area of Baughman's Lane and Shookstown Road.

Both Turner and Officer Martin were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officer Martin was treated and released after sustaining injuries to his legs, back and hip area. Turner was released from the hospital on Monday, August 19. Turner was then transported to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center. He's charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, failure to stop his vehicle at the scene of an accident that resulted in the injury of another, and an attempt to elude police.

This investigation is still open and ongoing, police say.
