Officials Warning Residents of Home Improvement Scams

- FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - The Frederick County Bureau of Investigation is reminding citizens to be cautious of scammers in the area offering to do home improvement work.

They say to be wary of folks offering driveway sealants, chimney repairs, duct cleaning, hot tar roofing, and metal roof painting.

Reputable contractors will be able to provide a company name, address, telephone number, credentials through Maryland Home Improvement Commission, and references.

Authorities say be aware of any contractor whose business name can not be verified, or whose credentials or license is outdated. They also say a scammer will most likely ask to be paid in cash or check, and many times, will request to be paid in advance of the work.

Deputies with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office say residents should immediately report any suspicious persons or activity to law enforcement at 301-600-1046.
