One Killed in Head-On Collision on Leitersburg Pike

- WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. - A serious two vehicle accident in Hagerstown claimed the life of one person, and sent several people to the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Emergency officials said the head-on collision happened around 2 p.m. along Leitersburg Pike and Orchid Drive. Police said Erica Rodriguez, 26, drove her minivan over the center lane and collided with Esther Bitner, 55 who was driving an SUV. Rodriguez was traveling with four children in her minivan and Bitner was traveling with Jessica Stanley, 34, and a child.

Two people were seriously injured and others were treated on the scene. Everyone was transported to Meritus Medical Center.

"In this area we do see these serious accidents occasionally. But this time with the vehicle  had multiple patients in them. So it did make it more challenging for us and called in additional resources to assist us," said Jason Eckstine, Long Meadow Fire Chief.

Bitner and Stanley were pinned inside the SUV and had to be taken out with the jaws of life, and with help from rescue squads. One of them being Bitner later died at the hospital.

Many residents rushed to the scene to see if they could help and even knew some of the victims involved.

"Devastated. We come up on a lot of accidents and I don't know why, we just you know, it's a whole other story once you actually run into somebody that you know. But hopefully she's going to be doing well," said Mike Hunsberger, Hagerstown resident.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. If anyone who may have witnessed the accident should contact Senior Trooper Cain at (301) 766 - 3800.
