FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police said a phone scammer targeted a local elderly woman by pretending to be a law enforcement officer.

Troopers said the incident occurred on Friday, August 1 at 11 a.m. at a home on Hillside Drive in Guilford Township.

The scammer called the 80-year-old victim on the phone, alleging to be an officer. The caller stated that the victim's "grandson" was arrested because he was a passenger inside a vehicle that drugs were found in.

The caller told the victim that the bail was set at $4,000 and she needed to purchase $4,000 worth of Green Dot Money Pak cards and call 438-875-6314 with the number code to retrieve the money. The woman did so, police say.

The caller then called the woman a second time and requested an additional $4,000, stating the bail amount was raised. The woman realized that it was a scam and reported the theft by deception to state police.
