Police Investigate Mystery Surrounding Brutal Shooting

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - It's a case that has family members, neighbors and people in the community worried and confused. Around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, a young woman was found shot outside her apartment in the Townes of Willow Tree development.

"Upon my arrival, I found a female lying on the ground, unresponsive, with a gunshot wound to her face," said Trooper D.W. Satterfield of the West Virginia State Police Martinsburg Detachment.

Taylor Hawkridge, 22, was found in the driveway of her apartment off of Andalusian Drive when police arrived at the scene.

"She was unresponsive," Satterfield said. "She was still breathing and then EMS arrived and transported her to Berkeley Medical Center. She had one single gunshot wound on the left side of her face."

Hawkridge was placed on life support as an organ donor and later pronounced dead at Winchester Medical Center.

Police say they still don't know who shot the 22-year-old. They say her two-year-old daughter was at the apartment at the time of the shooting.

"She was a mother, she had a little two-year-old," Satterfield said. "We've got several leads that we are following up on, but nothing I can really comment on right now. It's definitely suspicious."

Police say a dark-colored sporty-type vehicle fled the scene shortly after the gunshots were fired. Anyone with information is asked to call West Virginia State Police at 304-267-0002 and contact Cpl. J.J. Bowman or Trooper D.W. Satterfield.
