Police Make Arrest in Violent Frederick Rape

- FREDERICK, Md. - Officers with the Frederick Police Department have arrested a local man in connection to a February rape investigation.

Officers arrested Dario Jonathan Matson, 25, of Frederick, Md., Wednesday and charged him with first and second-degree rape, first and second-degree sex offense, first and second-degree assault, and robbery.

On February 26, 2014, detectives responded to the Frederick Memorial Hospital around 7 p.m. for a rape allegation. Upon arrival, detectives discovered the female victim was raped inside her apartment located in Frederick.

Further investigation revealed the victim was strangled and threatened with a knife after Matson broke into her apartment. The woman had multiple injuries including bite marks, cuts and other minor lacerations.

According to police, after raping the victim, Matson stole several items from her apartment. A subsequent DNA search warrant was granted on March 4, 2014 for the identified suspect.

On Wednesday, March 5 the Frederick Police Patrol Division located Matson in the area of S. Market Street and All Saints Street. After a brief pursuit on foot, officers apprehended Matson.

The investigation revealed the two had previously lived in separate apartments within the same apartment building in Frederick. However the two did not know each other intimately, and the man no longer lived in the building at the time the attack occurred. Police say they are happy to get Matson off the streets.

"Patrol was informed of this individual, they located him, detectives were able to come out and ultimately make an arrest. So we're very happy with the efforts, obviously very sad for the impact this has on our victim but we're happy to at least bring closure and some type of justice to our victim," said Lt. Clark Pennington, commander of the criminal investigations unit with the Frederick Police Department.

Officers say additional related charges may follow grand jury indictment.
