Police: Officer Accidentally Runs Over Detained Man

- UPDATE - Officers with the Moorefield Police Department have released an official statement of the events that occurred Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014 at a local Sheetz gas station parking lot. 

Police say around 9:30 p.m. an officer initiated a traffic stop at the gas station. During the traffic stop, police say a question arose involving the individuals inside the vehicle being in possession of narcotics, which lead to the arrest of the driver. 

Officers say the driver then became combative with an officer from the Moorefield Police Department and a West Virginia State Trooper who was assisting. The driver managed to escape and flee the scene on foot. Police say during an attempt to catch the fleeing suspect, another detained person was injured. 

Moorefield police say there is an ongoing internal and criminal investigation into this incident. 


After a video was posted on Facebook and shared thousands of times, police in Moorefield have confirmed that an officer accidentally ran over a man who was being detained at a gas station. 

The video was posted on social media via Kelly Kipp. In the video you can see two officers, a Moorefield Police Officer and a West Virginia State Trooper. According to Moorefield Police Chief Steven Reckart, this all happened after a traffic stop Sunday evening. 

In the video, you can see one of the men take off, and the officers give chase. The chief says one of his officers ran over another person who had been detained on the ground. You can't see that part in the video however, you can see the man screaming in pain afterwards. 

Chief Reckhart says the officer accidentally hit the man when attempting to chase the other man who took off. 

The incident remains under investigation. The man who was run over was treated and released from the hospital, according to police.
