Police: Suspect With Gun Surrenders After More Than Eight Hours

ALLEGANY COUNTY, MD - State police locked down an area in Cresaptown after neighbors reported hearing gun shots Monday night, but the situation ended peacefully Tuesday morning.

Police were on the scene near Fir Tree Lane and Spruce Street for more than eight hours. Police say Michael Wilhelm barricaded himself inside the single family home.

State police say Wilhelm recently moved into the home on the 14,000 block of Spruce Street with his father and personal issues may have prompted his actions.

Multiple agencies were called in to assist after police heard shots when they arrived on the scene. According to Elena Russo, the spokesperson with Maryland State Police, there was no one else in the house. Russo also said officials found a riffle inside.

"Up until I saw guys come through with the big guns, I thought, well, if it was that close, maybe they should be getting us out of here," says Tara Wiseman, a neighbor.

Wilhelm is being charged with four counts of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, and police say the motive for the shooting still isn't clear.

Police say they will be searching the house to find clues if he was allowed to have the rifle or not.
