24-year Frederick City Police veteran Kevin Grubb is challenging the incumbent, Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, who's served in the position for eight years.
Jenkins has had two terms in office, and he's hoping for a third. Grubb, a former deputy chief for the Frederick City Police Department, hopes that experience can land him the job of Frederick County sheriff.
The two have clear ideas of what they say are the most important issues in the county.
"Crime is a big issue in the county," Grubb said. "We showed a 14 percent increase in crime in Frederick County. In every county surrounding Frederick County, they've showed a decrease in crime. That to me is alarming. If every other county around Frederick County is showing a decrease in crime and Frederick County is showing an increase, we're not doing something right."
"With Maryland State Police reducing the number of troopers assigned to the Frederick Barrack, one of the problem that the sheriff's office faces is how do we adjust to that? How do we adjust to the increase in additional call volume, the obligations we pick up as the state's pulling out? We have to look at that and deal with that, along with a growing county," Jenkins said.
Grubb says some other important issues are reducing the heroin epidemic in the county and having a vision for the future. Jenkins says his top priorities are also reducing heroin use in the county and increasing technology.
They both have plans for what they hope to accomplish as sheriff.
"For one thing, I have a plan that I've spelled out and written out. It's on my website. It's on my Facebook page on how to take care of the heroin issue," Grubb said. "Training was cut in the sheriff's department years ago. That's one area you just don't cut. Things constantly evolve in police work, and you have prepared through training."
"I'm going to do the things I have been doing and continue to number one, prioritize security in our schools because I think that's very important and continue with the initiatives we've started to fight some of the crime problems," Jenkins said. "I'm going to continue to be fiscally responsible, which I think is very important."
There's no primary for Frederick County sheriff on the Democratic side, since only one person is running. The Republican candidate who wins in june will face off against the Democrat in November.
