All kinds of historic statues, our nation's Capitol, and dozens of museums are some of the things you can do during your summer getaway to
"The Newseum is a history museum through the lens of the media. What we do is we look at historic moments in news history and tell those stories through eyewitness news reports," says Jonathan Thompson, media relations manager at the Newseum.
The Newseum features six floors of exhibits, a news helicopter, and a whopping 40-by-22 foot television.
"We have 15 exhibits and 15 theaters, but we also open a number of temporary exhibits," Thompson says. "One of the temporary exhibits we opened this summer is our J.F.K exhibit."
Besides the J.F.K exhibit, you can see the media's coverage of the Berlin Wall and the 911 attacks, as well as see the Capitol from the 6th floor.
"Out in front of the museum, you'll recognize us because we have on display one newspaper from each of the 50 states and 30 international countries," Thompson says. "It's where people from all over the world can come, and if they're lucky enough, see their hometown newspaper on display."
The Newseum has an interactive newsroom area. People can grab the microphone, stand in front of the camera, and then give a report on TV.
"I like the interactive newsroom. It's really cool. I like how it's a lot like a real newsroom, and it's like I'm there," says Matt Rawlings, a visitor from
At the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, a new human genome exhibit is on display. You can learn about all kinds of animals in the ocean and mammal halls.
"So far, it is probably one of the coolest places I've ever seen in my life. There's so much history and so many bones. I really like the bones," says Jordan Linhart, a visitor from
From animal bones to learning about a satellite truck, you'll have plenty to see and do in the nation's capital.
