RANSON, WEST VIRGINIA (WHAG) - The West Virginia Division of Highways has closed Fifth Avenue in Ranson, Jefferson County, West Virginia near Charles Town Races due to a four by four foot sinkhole that was reported earlier on Monday.

According to the WVDOH, the sinkhole happened due to erosion from a box culvert under this section of road, which lets water pass under the road.

The Division of Highways says they may need to get a second opinion on how to repair this road, before they can open it again, and because of this, it may be awhile before the road is open to traffic.

The roads behind the Charles Town Races and Slots and immediately north of the railroad crossing will be closed until further notice.

There’s a detour up, taking drivers from Flowing Springs Road (Jefferson County Route 17) to Washington Street (WV Route 51) to George Street (WV Route 115). They're also redirecting traffic through the Charles Town Races parking lot.
