In July, the 4th Court of Appeals ruled Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. That law would have taken affect Thursday morning, August 21, 2014 had the Supreme Court not stepped in.
The ruling also affects West Virginia and North and South Carolina, as these states also fall under the 4th Court of Appeal's jurisdiction.
The Supreme Court's decision is no surprise, as they are expected to rule on the issue in the fall regarding Utah's ban on same-sex marriage.
