Ten Sent to Hospital in Frederick Apartment Fire

- FREDERICK, Md. - A devastating fire sent multiple people to the hospital Monday morning, according to fire officials.

Dispatchers with Frederick County said the call came in just after 2 a.m. Monday for a fire at the Hickory Hill apartment complex on Key Parkway, the same apartments that caught fire less than a week ago.

They said ten people were transported to different hospitals; six went to Frederick Memorial Hospital, and two kids and two adults were taken to a burn center in Washington, D.C.

Fire officials said the blaze started in a lower apartment inside, and went up on the outside to the second and third levels. They said the lower apartment is a total loss.

"I woke up and I said something happened here. It smelled like burning or something like that. And I woke up and I go to see in the window and I see a lot of smoke is coming from the apartment, so after that I'm going to call my sister, and call my cousin living in the other room, taking my baby and my personal pack and got out," said Maria Gamez, resident.

Dispatchers said about two dozen units responded, and they said the scene was starting to clear around 4:30 a.m.

No word on what caused the fire, but the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
