Two Housing Authority Employees Charged with Theft

- CUMBERLAND, Md. - Two employees with the Cumberland Housing Authority have been charged with theft following a three and a half month investigation, according to members with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit.

The investigation stemmed from allegations that items were stolen from a tenant's residence at the Klotz Mill apartments. It was first reported to Cumberland Police and C3I in late March 2014.

Investigators learned that the tenant had recently passed away. Proper procedure requires that next-of-kin be notified in order to make arrangements concerning the property left behind. In this case, police learned that two large flat screen televisions were removed from the apartment prior to the family taking possession of the remainder of the deceased tenant's property.

Investigators obtained criminal charges for the two employees responsible, identified as Leroy Francis Bennett Jr., 58, of Oldtown, and Williams Joseph Beechie III, 50, of Frostburg. On July 17 both were charged via a criminal summons with theft scheme over $1,000 and under $10,000. Both men are free pending their next court appearance.
