The incident happened on November 21, 2013 on Vale Summit Road. When troopers with the Maryland State Police arrived they discovered the suspects has entered the house by breaking the glass on a French door.
Once inside, the suspects removed numerous items, including a large amount of jewelry, laptop computers, electronic items, firearms and ammunition. The total loss to the victims in property stolen and in damage to the house was about $20,000. Investigators with C3I were called in to assist with the investigation.
On December 15, 2013 Harold Michael Nicol, Jr., 30, was arrested on unrelated charges by Frostburg Police. At that time, officers say he was found in possession of one of the reported stolen firearms. Based on this information Nicol was charged with first, third and fourth-degree burglary, theft and other related charges. He's currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $71,000 bond pending his next court appearance.
Throughout the investigation members with C3I developed a second suspect. Over the next several weeks they were able to gather enough information to allow them to obtain a search and seizure warrant.
On January 29, 2014 investigators searched a home on Pompey Smash Road in Vale Summit, and recovered a large amount of the stolen jewelry, laptop computer and electronics. As a result, Derrick James Swick, 32, was arrested and charged with first, third and fourth degree burglary, and theft. He's currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $200,000 bond pending his next court appearance.
