Vancouver, Washington Man Arrested in 1997 Child Abuse Case

FREDERICK, Md. - In a case spanning nearly 17 years, a former Frederick Keys pitcher has been arrested in Vancouver, Washington on multiple charges, including child abuse in connection to a 1997 case out of Frederick, Maryland.

Officers with the Frederick Police Department say on November 25, 2007 they began an investigation into a sexual molestation allegation that occurred almost ten years prior.

The allegation stated a 25-year-old man, now identified as Eric Meredith Estes, allegedly touched and engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with the 13-year-old son of his host family, between April and September of 1997. The case was investigated at that time, however police say due to lack of adequate information, which would have lead to a prosecution, the case was suspended.

"Our suspect was a player for the Frederick Keys in 1997. Players are often put up with host families and our victim was a member of his host family," said Lt. Clark Pennington, with the Frederick Police Department.

According to the Frederick Keys All-Time Roster, the now 41-year-old was a right handed pitcher for the baseball team in 1997.

Years later, in May 2014, the Vancouver Police Department in Washington State contacted the Frederick Police Department after discovering new information related to the 2007 investigation.

"The case was basically reopened based on new information that was discovered by the Vancouver Police Department so working with all three agencies we were able to establish additional probable cause or additional information to substantiate probable cause and charges have been placed against our suspect," said Pennington.

As a result, the 2007 case was reopened, and a joint investigation was collaborated between the Frederick Police Department, the Vancouver Police Department and the Clark County, Washington Sheriff's Office.

Investigators in Washington State were able to confirm the initial allegations when the suspect, who now lives in Vancouver, was reinterviewed.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2014 charges were issued against Estes. Deputies with the Clark County Sheriff's Office said they arrested Estes around 9 p.m. on a felony arrest warrant issued out of Frederick, Maryland.

Deputies with Clark County say Estes is teacher at Skyview High School in Vancouver, and is currently on administrative leave from the Vancouver School District due to allegations of misconduct that happened in Maryland in 1997. On the school's website it states Estes is a social studies teacher and head baseball coach at the school.

Estes has been booked into the CCSO jail on charges of child abuse, third-degree sex offense, and attempted second-degree sex offense. Clark County Deputies say there is currently no investigation or pending charges against him locally.

Police say Estes is being held in Vancouver, Washington and is awaiting extradition to Maryland.

Deputies with the Clark County Sheriff's Office say Estes is having his first appearance Thursday on his extradition warrant back to Maryland.

Further information regarding the victim in this case is being withheld since the male was a juvenile at the time of the abuse, police say.
