VIRGINIA - Virginia attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli is running for governor.
In a letter to his employees, Cuccinelli said he feels he can "best serve the people of Virginia from the governor's office."
The decision sets up a contested Republican gubernatorial primary against current Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling.
Bolling has already received Governor Bob McDonnell's endorsement for 2013.
Since winning the attorney general's office in 2009, Cuccinelli has been in the headlines because of his conservative viewpoints.
Cuccinelli is one of many attorneys general who have filed a lawsuit against the federal government's health care mandate.
