That is when we go for the typical thirst-quenchers such as coffee, soda and energy drinks.
Many of us have heard the phrase, "Drink more water," but whether we do or not, chances are, we might not be drinking enough.
The organization, "Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles of Washington County" (HEAL) recently started a campaign promoting the community to stay hydrated known as "Rethink your
"You mainly want to stick to calorie-free, so sugar-free tea, decaf coffee, plain water and really stay away from energy drinks," says Brandy Baxter, community health and wellness outreach coordinator.
Energy drinks should never be used to replace water. Most energy drinks like Red Bull and Superstar contain caffeine which causes the body to lose water and develop anxiety and headaches, according to Let's Go!, a nationally recognized childhood obesity program.
"I think people don't really understand that our body is mostly water, so it just makes sense we need to replenish that, and some people may drink water but they don't understand that they need to drink more of it," says Jenny Fleming, executive director of Heal of Washington County.
An average person should intake approximately 64 ounces each day, especially when exercising and sweating.
Baxter adds, "It's a natural way to hydrate. It doesn't have extra chemicals, calorie-free, and it really helps with all the functions in your body."
Water is free of chemicals, coloring, artificial dye and sweeteners. However, there is a catch. There is such a thing as drinking too much water to the point where toxins develop in
your body, but Baxter says that only happens if gallons of water are consumed.
Lack of water in your body can result in diabetes, obesity, or heart disease. Baxter also recommended to not letting your body get to the level of feeling thirsty as it signifies dehydration.
For those who does not like water as much, adding a vanilla or orange extract can give it some flavor.
Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles of Washington County is promoting a six week challenge to see if anyone can drink 64 ounces of water each day. There will be prize giveaways for winners. If you think you are up for the challenge, click here to register.
